At RB Plastering we provide the following services.

Top Coat Plastering (Skimming).

RB Plastering top coat plaster (skim) over old walls and ceilings, and new plasterboard.

Top coat plastering is one of the main things that can completely transform tired or damaged walls and ceilings.

At RB Plastering we plaster over a lot of old artexed ceilings. Artexed ceilings were all the rage during the late 1970’s and 80’s, but these days look very dated. With a small amount of prep, we can plaster over any artexed ceiling. Assuming the room is clear, the majority of ceilings can be completed in one day.

Removing old wallpaper is something else that will often require a skim of plaster afterwards (the main culprit is wood chip). An older building will often have multiple layers of paper, and the process of removing it will usually damage the walls. Again, depending on how much preparation is needed, an average size room can be plastered in under two days.

We can also top coat new plasterboard walls or ceilings.

We will undertake any patch repairs needed (water damage etc.)

When painting new plaster, make sure to wait until the entire plastered surface has dried to a very light pink colour. For the first coat, use a mix of 50% paint and 50% water to seal the surface. Once dry, use the the same mixture for the second coat. Make sure to roll out any roller lines. The third and fourth coat (if needed) can be neat emulsion.

External Rendering (Traditional Sand and Cement).

At RB Plastering we can render any exterior wall using the traditional method of sand and cement.

Rendering will provide an excellent covering on old and new masonry work.

The art of rendering has been around for hundreds of years. Before the modern process of mixing cement and sand to create mortar, the original mortar was created by mixing lime to sand. This was a lengthy process involving many hours of hand mixing to form a usable mortar. This kind of mortar is still used today on period and listed properties.

Today, with modern portland cement, various chemicals and powered mixing equipment, a very strong mortar can be used to cover new and old exterior surfaces.

Rendering old brick and blockwork is an excellent way of updating a building. Brick can deteriorate over the course of many years (especially porous red brick) and the surface can start to flake away. The mortar between the bricks can also start to disappear, leaving a very poor exterior surface. Rendering will give a new smooth surface and also prevent any potential damp problems.

Rendering generally involves a base (scratch) coat in which a fibre mesh is embedded, followed by a top coat rubbed up with a rendering “float” to give the smooth final appearance.

The new render will then require painting with a good quality masonry paint.

K Rend Coloured Silicone Render

RB Plastering specialises in K Rend Silicone FT textured render.

K Rend Silicone FT is our most popular choice of external render coating.

White K Rend on an extension

K Rend is a brand name for what is known as “monocouche render”. Unlike traditional sand and cement, this type of render is scraped on the final coat to achieve the uniform textured finish. K Rend is also a “through coloured” render, which means it has pigment added during manufacture. Because colour is added to the render, no painting is required. There is a wide range of colours to choose from, which you can view on the K Rend simulator.

There are a number of processes that must be followed during application to achieve the correct colour and finish. There is the original surface prep, followed by a base coat with anti fungal mesh, a primer, and then the finish top coat to be scraped.

The reason the product is called K Rend Silicone FT is due to the small silicone particles in the mixing powder. When the surface has dried, the silicone particles will sparkle in the sunlight.

We have used a fair number of colours over the years, with K Rend “White” being the most popular choice.

If you are interested in K Rend as a potential choice on your property, we can arrange a viewing of a number of projects we have completed.

Plasterboarding and Dry Lining

At RB Plastering we can take care of any plaster boarding or drylining you require.

Plasterboard can be used over new and old walls and ceilings to provide a good surface for plastering.

Plasterboarding in new extension.

We can build new stud walls, plasterboard and plaster to finish standard.

Any stud walls we build will be timber studs, insulated with good quality insulation, and then plasterboarded with 12.5mm plasterboard. This will then be plastered to finished standard. We can also fit all required door linings and hang doors if required.

We can undertake any dry lining needed. Dry lining is a process where plasterboard is stuck to a masonry surface rather than screwed to timber. This is often used in new extensions or in garage conversions to create walls that can then be plastered. The boards are stuck with drywall adhesive, which is a type of thick sticky plaster. This is a very versatile way of achieving a nice even wall, even on the most uneven of surfaces.

If an artexed ceiling pattern is too deep to be plastered, or damaged in any way, we can plasterboard over it and re-plaster.

Soundproofing

RB Plastering will undertake soundproofing of walls and ceilings, particularly useful in flats and semi detached party walls.

It’s an unfotunate fact that build quality of many houses and flats is way below par. Most of us at one time or another have heard neighbour noise through walls or ceilings.

a ceiling with metal beams and insulation

The good news is the quality of soundproofing materials has improved massively in recent years.

The old method of soundproofing was to build another stud wall in front of the original to create some dead space between the two. Although pretty effective, this can lose space in the room. With modern soundproofing systems, far less space is needed to achieve extremely effective soundproofing.

Well designed clips and channels can be installed to existing walls and ceilings, followed by layers of sound deadening foam/rubber and soundboard. The surface is then plastered and painted.

Although cost is often an issue with soundproofing, the benefits can be well worth it.

Coving and Cornice

RB Plastering are able to install coving and all types of decorative cornice.

Coving and cornice is used as a decorative feature at the junction of wall and ceiling.

Up until the early 2000’s coving was installed in most new builds as a matter of course.

Although not as popular as it once was, we still install coving in a wide range of properties.

We can install new, repair or replace any standard issue Gyproc coving (4 and 5″ half round).

Larger, more detailed and ornate cornice is also something we can install. This type of cornice is an excellent addition to more period style properties.
